Zoey BreretonEarth ScienceCurrent Event Report #2 For my current event report I read an about the North & Tropical Atlantic Ocean bringing changes to climate in Antarctica. The gradual warming of both the North and Tropical Atlantic Ocean is making a significant impact to climate change in Antarctica. Xichen Li, a doctoral student in NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences says that the recent findings that were previously unknown show a force behind the climate change that has been occurring in the southern hemisphere. Over the past 30 years, Antarctica has experienced many noticeable climate changes (its peninsula shows the strongest warming of any region on the planet). The changes have mostly been pointed to greenhouse gases, but with thorough research using time-series analysis and a computer model it was found that the North Atlantic warming was causing Antarctic climate change. This new data observation brings up a number of alarming and important questions about climate and the environment in general. Is the Antarctic sea to ice change different from the well known changes that occur in the Arctic? The ice in the arctic goes up and down; it is not necessarily diminishing. This study makes it more clear that human activity/pollution is not the only contribution to global warming. The new findings are significant because it shows that we are not the only cause of global warming and that means it is harder to control as it is not easy to know the ways of the ocean, especially when it comes to the North Atlantic. This article was interesting and contained a lot of in-depth analysis as to why the climate is so frequently changing in the Antarctic and Atlantic. Although it was an interesting topic to begin with, the author could have used language easier to grasp so that the topic was more clearly explained as the root/cause of the problem was not mentioned until halfway through the article. Aside from the intricate language, the article was intriguing enough to make me wonder about our climate and environmental changes. Citation: NYU.
