Current Event: Snow in the Northeast

Ortiz, Erik, and Henry Austin. "Northeast getting slammed with cold, snow as winter storm intensifies." NBC News. 21 Jan. 2014. NBC. 10 Feb. 2014 <http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/01/21/22381468-northeast-getting-slammed-with-cold-snow-as-winter-storm-intensifies?lite>.

I read an article by the name of "Northeast Getting Slammed with Cold Snow as Winter Storm Intensifies". This article was about the harsh cold and snowy conditions the northeast has been having for the past couple weeks. It talks about how some areas of the Northeast are getting more then a foot of snow and harsh blistering winds. It also talks about how the areas affected by this weather are closing schools and shutting down government buildings. It shows that the National Weather Service recorded 15.5 inches of snow in Manalapan, New Jersey and a little over a foot in Philadelphia. This snow that these areas had, later turned into ice in the next few days. This then caused many personal injuries. Scott Graham, the assistant chief of Montgomery County fire and rescue in Maryland said, "We've had about 80+ calls for personal injuries collisions." and that was in one day. It also says that the Governors of Delaware, New York and New Jersey called states of emergencies because of blizzard conditions on tuesday, January 21. New York also broke three snow fall records and 11 inches fell in Northeast Heights, Maryland. This bad weather also made air travel to become dangerous and more than 6,600 flights were canceled, and 3,342 were delayed on the 21st. Tom Ripley, a hardware store owner in Washington D.C. said, "Nobody prepares because we never get any snow, so the slightest chance of it, everybody freaks out." He then said that his store then sold out of shovels and ice melt for the storm. It also says how in some states the temperatures drop massively, as close to 30 to 40 degrees. Then it goes on to say how the great lakes will have and effect on states like Michigan and Wisconsin, as they will receive massive snowfalls that come from the lakes.

This shows how the country and the people of the United States are being affected by these winter storms. It also causes a negative effect on wild life because wild life eats the ice salt thinking it is food and it dehydrates the animal and it dies. This is also bad for the well being of people as many get injured by slipping on ice, or a car skidding on black ice. This is also a downside for the schools of the affected areas as many have to cancel and many students miss a lot of class. This is also bad for working people because it is very hard to get to work when the roads are covered in snow and ice and are to dangerous to drive on.

I believe that this article is very strong. It come from a reliable source in NBC and it has great first person view of people who have been effected by the storm. It also is strong because there are some videos that go along with the story that help picture what is going on in other states besides New York. It is also strong because of the lead meteorologist that gave them information about the storm is from the weather channel, which is a very reliable source.

  2. As I read your article I was alarmed by the fact that animals are being affected by the salt that humans are putting in the streets. The weather is affecting people negatively, especially since there have been many injuries. I did not realize how severe the weather really was until reading this article. I thought that you presented the statistics and quotes from experts really well. In addition, I thought that you really expressed the severity of the weather really well, as it is affecting businesses and schools. A suggestion I would have for you to better this review would be to expand upon your critique for this article. Maybe it should have expressed why the weather has been like this? Is it because of global warming? Otherwise, I think you did a great job with this article.

  3. I agree with Serina. It was a well written report, but my question is, how rare are these snow storms really? I remember getting even more snow than this at least a few times as a kid. As disruptive as this storm was, was it really unusual in terms of long-term weather patterns? Perhaps it would be better to get an article from a source that is specifically a science-section of a paper or website, as opposed to just the general news. The article really didn't address climate or give you a sense of the "big picture" over large time scales.

  4. Good job Joe, this was a well written paragraph explained very well how the harsh winter affected the entire country not only the people in the Northeast’s life. Before reading your article I thought that it was mostly the northeast that had been effected by the harsh winter. The fact that even the south has to shut down their schools is alarming. It is understandable however, since they are not prepared for a winter like this. I thought that you did a really good job with explaining how not only the schools but how everyday life has been effected by this unusually harsh winter. I also thought you did a really good job explaining the extreme amounts of severe injuries that the snow and ice have caused. I did not even consider how the extreme amount of salt that has been put on the roads was harming the wildlife. The article might have not covered this but I am interested on why this winter has been so tough?

  5. Joe I really found this current event interesting. I thought the article was summarized very well in a way that gave us the main points of the article.I also liked how you quoted an every day work man that had a good vantage point on this subject. Especially since he was worked at a hardware store which sold gear for the snow. I was surprised to learn how widespread the snow had been this year. I know that the winter has been hard for people up in New York, but I was surprised to learn that people in D.C. and Delaware have been so affected by the snow storms. I have also never thought about animals being affected by ice that is put all around. It does make total sense though. Also I can see how traumatic it would be for people who drive around with black ice all over the place. Also its amazing how many flights where canceled because of the snow. Finally I wonder if global warming has had an impact on this winter. Even though it seems contradictory many scientist believe global warming is the reason for many extreme storms we faced recently. Anyway great job Joe!

  6. Joe, this is a quality current event. I liked how thorough and descriptive your summary paragraph was, and that gave me a good understanding of the article you were discussing. Likewise, I really liked the article that you chose. I know a lot of people have been affected by this crazy weather, so I think it's good that you are reporting on it. And I also liked how you analyzed the validity of your source in your final paragraph. It is important to have a reliable source, and NBC has a reputation as being the gold standard of reporting.
I was seriously alarmed to hear that the temperatures were dropping 30-40 degrees in some parts. That's a serious health risk, and I hope no one got hurt because of that. I was also shocked to hear that there was 11 inches of snow in Maryland. They probably don't get that much snow down there, but that just goes to show how severe of a storm this has been.
I think that one of the things that could make your current event better is having a better relevancy paragraph. We already know that this affects New Yorkers because of school closings and tricky traffic, but what is the national impact of this storm? How is the East coast weather affecting the West coast weather? I would have liked to hear about that, but otherwise it was a very good current event.

  7. Joe, this is a very well written current event article. I would agree with Thomas in that your reflection related how the harsher weather conditions have affected the entire country as a whole. In contrast, however, i would also agree with Mrs. McClellan, because it is a valid point to address the severity of the most recent storms in comparison to previous storms from twenty or thirty years ago. It is interesting to hear stories about storms that occurred a while ago and how they affected the country. An interesting subject to dig deeper into would be to compare the effects of these storms with how previous storms affected the country. nevertheless, i thought that it was attention-grabbing to hear you talk about the weather affecting wildlife in addition to it causing an increase in personal injuries sustained as a result of slipping on ice covered surfaces. Personally, I think that your article may not have covered some of the more in-depth questions... Of these include questions such as the economic effects of the winter weather causing people to panic in the south, when you stated that the stores were running out of inventory on shovels. It may be an important aspect of this topic to look at the big picture of weather affecting individuals' lives and how that overall contributes to the big picture. For example, if roads are experiencing horrendous conditions, then it is likely that many people would stay inside and that may affect businesses and the amount of people that are able to go out and purchase things from stores. That is just one of the topics that i feel that your article did not shed as much light on, although I think that it did a tremendous job at explaining how the winter storms have affected a wide variety of things, from travel to government building shut-downs. I also thought that you did a great job at examining the sources from this article.
