New Clues to the Early Solar System from Ancient Meteorites

I read article number three, it explained the study by scientists of diogenites. Diogenites are a kind of meteorite that were a part of a larger asteroid, like Vesta. Studying these meteorites gives us a better idea of how Earth and other planets in our solar system were formed. These diogenites were formed at about the same time as Earth and its moon were, so by studying these rocks we can see how Earth formed. from examining and studying these rocks we have learned that large asteroids like Vesta underwent the same process as Earth and other planets, but could not finish it. This could be because the gravity of the asteroid was not strong enough to pull together enough smaller rocks to form a planet. Basically, by studying the diogenites we find, we have a scale model of Earth when it was very young, before it developed an atmosphere, plate tectonics, or an electromagnetic field. And by learning more about these meteorites, we learn more about the asteroids they came from, which gives us a lot of information on exactly how the earth was formed.

  1. Nice job summarizing a difficult article. Thanks for defining "diogenites" for us!
