Blog Post #2

The article "Half-Baked Asteroids Have Earth-Like Crust" has provided me with new fascinating knowledge about meteorites and the Solar System. Recently, two meteorites were discovered possessing rock that was not believed to have been able to form in the crusts of asteroids due to their small size. the previously thought process of how asteroids form had to then be rethought at the discovery of this information. The scientists first researching the meteorites realized that these did not have the common composition of other asteroids. Unlike other, the composition was much alike with Earth's. This was especially odd because of the process that scientist thought had to take place in order for the rock, andesite, to form. With farther research, it was discovered that these meteorites were formed way back at the beginning of the solar system, around 4.5 billion years ago. Personally, I found this amazing, that something could be out in space for so long without ending up anywhere besides recently on Earth. These meteorites provides scientists with new intellect on the formation of crusts on Earth and the other planets.

  1. Nicely done. Where do they think the meteorites came from? How do they inform us as to the formation of Earth's crust?
