Chang, Kenneth. "Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ Rocket Company, to Launch From Florida." The New York Times. The New York Times, 15 Sept. 2015. Web. 29 Sept. 2015.
The article that I read was about Jeff Bezos, the CEO of amazon, and how he has created “Blue Origin”, a rocket and space exploration company. Bezos announced on September 15 that Blue Origin is going to build rockets, and send them into orbit. Blue Origin will employ over 300 people by making their own factory for the rockets they will be launching. Their launch area is actually the same area NASA launched Pioneer 10, and Surveyor 1. The launch complex, formally called Launch Complex 36, is located at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. As far as Bezos’ plans on the launch specifically, the public is unaware of; the only information released is that the rocket will be released by the end of the decade, it is being manufactured with human travel in mind, and that the company’s goal is to make the rocket reusable because most rockets to date are crashed after one use. The article also said that Blue Origin completed their first flight test in april. They created a spacecraft that reached a height of 307,000 feet above their testing site after traveling over three times the speed of sound. The spacecraft, called “New Shepard” was created to take people on suborbital trips. Although the New Shepard test went very well, the booster did actually crash due to a problem in the hydraulic system. This is just the beginning of Blue Origin, and the some of the first information we have about their upcoming launch.
This story is important to society because Blue Origin could become a rival to NASA in the long run. Although it seems like a longshot, Blue Origin seems to have great potential, and is incredibly ambitious. When Bezos ended his announcement about Blue Origin he said, “... one day I look forward to having a press conference with you guys in space”. This alone just proves how big Bezos is dreaming and planning. If Blue Origin really accomplishes what they are speaking of, they have amazing potential to become a NASA rival, sending rockets into space. They could be the company we look at for space information in the future, before anyone else. The amount of exploration that could be achieved with Bezos’ dedication is unthinkable and is definitely exciting to think about. This article was also interesting because Bezos is the CEO of Amazon. Amazon has really blown up in the past couple years and is really taking over society. Thinking about it, a space exploration company is one of the only things bigger than a website that is basically running the shopping industry right now. Bezos is really an incredible entrepreneur and has made some incredible advancements in many different aspects of life. Society should really be on the lookout for Blue Origin and Bezos, they could be the future of space exploration.
This article, from The New York Times was well written in many aspects. The author, Kenneth Chang did a great job incorporating quotes into the story of Bezos’ announcement. This definitely made me more interested in the story because I felt like most of what Chang was saying was validated by a Bezos quote. Also the article was not very lengthy but it was jam packed with information about Blue Origin and all of their endeavors. Chang included information about recent difficulties competing with other space exploration companies, and really kept everything simple so the general public would find it easy to understand. This being said, I feel as though the article could have been a little more complex in its information, and vocabulary. The article was definitely interesting and I learned about Blue Origin as well as their plans for the future, but I do believe it could’ve been a little more detailed or complex. Overall I really enjoyed this article, and am excited to see what Blue Origin does in the future.
