Craters

Dryden Quigley
In 2010 Brown University studies published and article that maps more than 5,000 craters on the moon's surface. The students learned about the different sizes of objects were hurdling through space during the beginning of time. Some scientists believe that throughout time different sized objects have hit the moon causing the craters. Other scientists had hypothesized that larger projectiles hit the moon during its infancy and the projectiles continued to get smaller throughout time. The research done by these students adds to the hypothesis becuase they studied the size of the older and newer craters and could see that the projectiles' impact gradually got smaller. The Orientale basin seems to be the last crater of the large projectiles and after that they got smaller. This makes scientists wonder what was happening in space before the Orientale basin and wonder if the asteroid belt was controlled by a different force. Craters can tell us when an object hit the moon and the size of the projectile.

  1. Excellent summary. What are some possible explanations for why the projectiles got smaller with time?
