“Europe and Russia Mission to Assess Moon Settlement”

"Europe and Russia Mission to Assess Moon Settlement - BBC News." BBC News. N.p., n.d. Web. 18 Oct. 2015.

It has been a while since somebody has landed on the moon. The article I read is “Europe and Russia Mission to Assess Moon Settlement” by Pallab Ghosh. This article talks about a potential space mission, Luna 27 (set to take place in 5 years), in which they would land people on the moon in order to establish a permanent settlement. Scientists are eager to see what lies by the south pole of our moon since we have not gone there and in order to find out, they will send drones first. They hope that it will have ice water as well as other elements that we can hopefully make into something that we can survive off of. They are not only in search of water, however, they are also in search of valuable rock and minerals which they will obtain through a drill provided by the Europeans.

A permanent settlement on our moon is a gigantic leap in space exploration. Not only are we finding out more about our moon, but, it will be the first place other than our earth that will have permanent settlements on it. Settling on the moon will also solve some of our problems on earth after a couple decades. The rapidly increasing population will soon have another place to branch-off to. Many areas, such as Mexico city are ridiculously overpopulated, and a new place like the moon will allow for a less dense population on earth, and a newfound population on the moon. Not only that, but when mining on the moon, the astronauts may find an element or substance in which can allow for new creations or scientific discoveries.

This article was thorough and well-written. I could not find any major flaws with Ghosh’s writing. One criticism I have for him is to have more fluidity. His ideas are very jumbled, however, the article is still easy to follow. His writing has many strengths including short concise sentences and paragraphs that get straight to the main idea. That as well as the fact that it is so easily followable are two strengths that I feel Ghosh demonstrated perfectly.

    Current Events Comments John Marshall

For my current events assignment this week, I read Jack Baxter’s write-up about Europe and Russia sending a mission to the Moon. I really liked how he explained what the purpose of the mission was, as he says they hope to find water as well as rocks and minerals on the South Pole of the Moon. I also liked how he showed the effects this mission could have on space travel, as the area could act as a settlement for human life if the conditions are good. Also saying that it could be used for places that are overpopulated. Finally, I liked how he tied chemistry and earth science into the piece as he talks about the hopes scientists have of finding a new element.
While Jack’s article was very good, there were a few things he could’ve done to make it better. First off, I think it would’ve been a good idea for him to include a quote about the topic, as it helps the reader to better understand the topic, maybe from one of the scientists leading the project. Also, he made a few grammatical errors like not capitalizing the Moon that could easily be fixed.
One thing that really surprised me in the article was that the scientists are going to send drones to the south pole of the Moon before they go there. To me it is amazing that they have this type of technology.
