Comet Siding Spring Whizzes Past Mars

The article, “Comet Siding Spring Whizzes Past Mars,” which is on the Discovery News website, discusses a comet that recently nearly collided with Mars.  The article says that a Mars comet impact would be very exciting, and that it would be a very irregular chance to study the comet’s impact on Mars. Also, the article gives a background on the comet, where it originated and how long it will take until it passes Mars again.

The comet that nearly collided with Mars affects humanity in general because it’s very dangerous to our planet. If it nearly collided with Mars, our neighboring planet, there’s a decent chance that it could come close to the Earth. The discovery of this comet is significant because it an extremely rare sighting of this specific comet, as according to the article, the comet traveled over one million years to first reach Mars, and it won’t return for another one million years. Also, the comet was very close to making contact with Mars, as it was approximately 87,000 miles away from the planet. If it collided with Mars, it would’ve made a huge crater.

I felt that all the points in the article were well supported by the evidence. I enjoyed the article because it was very specific in describing where the comet was in space, and how fast it was traveling. Nothing was missing in the article, and the science is substantiated. None of the aspects of the research were overlooked or poorly explained. This research raises questions about whether this same comet will come close to colliding with any more planets of our solar system during its orbit.

  1. Great job Ben I really enjoyed this summary!

3 Aspects of the review that were particularly well presented:

I thought the way you added what could be studied if the comet had hit Mars was really interesting and cool to learn about. I also thought that the way you talked about how it would have effected earth was very relevant and an important piece of information to add. Lastly I really liked your hypothesis at the end of your last paragraph. I thought it was one of the most detailed hypothesis' that I read out of everyones summaries and that is was very well written.

2 Things you were impressed by/or learned from reading the article and its review:
I was really surprised by how much impact the crater hitting into Mars could have had on earth and how it may have also had impact into earth like it almost did on Mars. I also was amazed at how close the comet came to hitting Mars. It was only 87,000 miles away!

1 suggestion for how the review could have been even better:
I thought your summary really lacked in background information about the comet and the article you read about it as well.

    Overall really nice job!

  2. Ben,
There were several parts of your review that I thoroughly admired. First, I felt like your summary paragraph had some good background in it. There wasn't a ton of information, but the details you listed were relevant. You were able to incorporate a good amount of facts into the paragraph without boring the reader. Next, your analysis of the comet and its impact on the Earth was quite interesting. I never would have made the connection between the comet coming close to Mars and thus possibly coming close to Earth too. Finally, your review possessed not much superfluous information. Everything was to the point, and you didn't write more than you had to. As a result, the review never felt long or tiresome.
Like I said earlier, one of the things that really surprised me was your connection between the comet nearly colliding with Mars and the comet possibly coming close to the Earth since the Earth and Mars are pretty close as far as solar system distance goes. It really is crazy that the big comet was only 87,000 miles away from Mars. Also, I was very happy with your critique paragraph. It was succinct and still managed to analyze the article well.
One thing I would suggest to possibly improve your current event style is incorporating quotes into your reviews. Quotes from reputable sources (i.e. Discovery News) help to backup the points you make in the review and tend to make your writing a bit more credible.
    Overall, great work Ben!!

  3. In Ben’s review of the article, he briefly summarized the article. I viewed this as both a good and bad aspect of the review. I was able to get a quick understanding of the article, but I felt as though there were details that he left out that would have given me a better understanding on the topic. In his connecting paragraph explaining why this is important to humanity, he did a good job on his explanation. He stated that if it collides with Mars, there is a possibility it could come close to Earth. Another thing Ben did a good job on was his critique of the article. He stated that he thought it was very well written and explained why. Despite the brief summary, I was able to learn important and interesting new facts about the potential collision between Mars and a comet. The comet that could collide with Mars has orbited for 100 million years and currently is 87,000 miles away from the planet.
