"Underwater Volcano Discovered Off the Coast of Hawaii"

An ancient underwater volcano has been discovered off the coast of Hawaii. Some scientists have found that this volcano may have helped the island of Oahu be raised. The volcano has been named Ka’ena because it was found off the tip of Oahu, which is called Ka’ena. Geologists say that the volcano was active about 5 million years ago. There are three volcanoes that formed Oahu Ka’ena being the oldest, although the Waianae was the first to surface about 4 million years ago. The youngest of the three was the Koolau volcano, which surfaced 3 million years ago.  The island of Oahu is the most populous island in the state of Hawaii, and is the 20th largest island in the US.

I found this article to be very interesting because we are still learning about volcanoes and how they form islands all around the globe. It is hard to believe that 3 million years go the islands of Hawaii were being formed and now we call them our home. John Sinton a professor at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa stated, “What is particularly interesting is that Ka'ena appears to have had an unusually prolonged history as a submarine volcano, only breaching the ocean surface very late in its history…” this is a quote I took a long look at because when you think about volcanoes today you think massive mountains that erupt causing lava to pour out and cause huge fires. But this volcano never really got the chance to even sprout out of the water.

This article only really jumped out to me because it pertained to what we are doing in class. The title wasn’t eye grabbing and I thought the writer could have gone into a little bit more detail on what this means for the world it was more of here a new volcano was discovered underwater and is harmless and we think it formed an island of Hawaii. There were no big words to describe the volcano so I couldn’t get a picture in my head about how big it was or how deep in the ocean it is today.
